Getting Naked Soon! An Update

ProgressReportVenus

Exactly one year ago today, I was fully funded for my Kickstarter to finish and publish Getting Naked for Money: An Accidental Travel Writer Reveals All.

Yesterday, I sent the completed manuscript of the book to the copy-editor. There are still plenty of steps before you see it, but the hardest part is done.

I could probably spend another year tinkering but I’m as happy with it as any semi-depressive, obsessive editor who is never satisfied with anything is likely to be.

The end?

The First Review

It helped that the first person to read the complete revised manuscript, an editor who was tasked with checking the book for narrative structure, pacing, continuity, etc. had this to say about it:

Rarely do I have such a polished, competent ms to work on. You are a gifted writer who gets it on a fundamental level.  Your voice is witty, snarky, confident, at times lyrical and wistful, ruthlessly honest and just overall thoroughly engaging. I laughed out loud a few times….In short: I was immersed in your book from beginning to end. The thing that really struck me, in addition to your voice and use of language, is the deftness with which you balance the personal with the informative. I really felt like I got to know you as an individual, while also learning a lot about the day to day of freelancing, industry politics and so on. You sugar-coat NOTHING. It’s just a good read, plain and simple.

I hesitated to post this, but I am practicing self-promotion. Also, all of you who supported me deserve to know that your investment hasn’t gone to waste, that all the time I spent writing and rewriting has paid off.

Now What?

Now I work with a designer to pin down the style of the book: Typeface, thingies between sections, final cover design. I write an afterward and acknowledgments and back cover copy. I figure out the best methods of publishing, distributing, and publicizing the book.

I’ll be blogging about this process as I learn along with you.

Stay tuned.

I agree with the reviewer. Although I never read the manuscript, what she described must have been written by you! Congrats Edie.

I’d love to help with the book design. But, as I have been heard to comment when shopping for underpants, I don’t really have a strong opinion about thingies between sections.

I’m a bit late but I just read this progress report and the editorial comment about your book. Wow, very impressive; I don’t blame you for sharing! And I as a supporter, am very glad to hear my money is not wasted (not that I ever thought it was). I can’t wait to read my copy
